My Journey

July Unboxing

So excited to dive into my monthly wellness box from Young Living!  I decided to order some of the new products that were released at Convention.

I ordered the Desert Mist Diffuser, which is absolutely beautiful.  I love that it has so many different settings and changes colors.

It also came with two free oils – 5ml of Tangerine and Peppermint.

And then I just HAD to try some of the new Savvy Minerals makeup.

All of the new makeup products were in seriously high demand, but I managed to get one of the eyeshadows (Unscripted).

I also ordered Wanderlust, but alas, it sold out before my order processed. Next time for sure!

So Sleepy Rollerball

Rollerballs are a great way to use essential oils topically and create your own blends.  Typically, rollerballs are made with with one or more essential oils and then diluted with a carrier oil.  One of the rollers I use frequently is what I call my “So Sleepy” roller using Lavender and Cedarwood combined with a carrier oil.  I thought it would be helpful to do a quick tutorial video on how to make a roller.  It is super easy to do!

I use my sleepy roller every night before bed by rolling the blend on my wrists.  It is relaxing a supports a night of restful sleep.

And once you’ve made one roller, you’ll be looking for ways to make more.

M-Grain

M-Grain

Every month I look forward to choosing what comes in my Essential Rewards order.  Often it’s restocking my go-to oils (like Panaway and Peppermint), but I love trying out new oils.  This month I decided that I’d give M-Grain a try.

I have lived with migraines since I turned eighteen.  And I’ve been prescribed a number of medications, none of which really worked.  In fact, as is often the case with medications these days, the side effects made me feel worse than if I’d just left well enough alone.  Over the years, I’ve managed to mostly get my migraines under control through changes in diet and lifestyle.  But, once a month and when the barometric pressure drops, I’m almost guaranteed a migraine.

Over the months of using oils, I found that both peppermint and Panaway have been helpful due to their anti-inflammatory properties.  And peppermint is always my go to when my stomach gets upset.  When I read that M-Grain was really good with relieving tension when massaged into the back of the neck and temples, I decided it was worth a try too.

M-Grain

M-Grain is a blend of Basil, Marjoram, Lavender, Peppermint, Roman Chamomile, and Helichrysum.

I have used it both topically, by massaging onto the back of my neck and along my temples to relieve tension, and aromatically by dropping it into my palms and cupping over my nose and mouth to inhale.  By using these oils in addition with my usual methods of ice packs and a dark room, their cooling and soothing properties help to give me some peace.

Highest Potential

Highest Potential

I received an email today and in it was this sentence – “Your expansion is limitless.”  I have been struggling with feeling less than and allowing fear to immobilize me.  The beauty of this life we have, is that in every moment we are give the chance to choose again, to choose differently, to allow ourselves grace, and to acknowledge that we are vast and limitless beings.

Tonight I’m putting a few drops of this oil over my heart and saying thanks for that one little sentence.

Highest Potential is a blend of Australian Blue, Gathering, Jasmine, and Ylang Ylang.  Gathering is a blend containing the biblical oils of frankincense, galbanum, cedarwood, and sandalwood.

Laundry Day

Laundry Detergent

Recently, I attended a great Ditch & Switch class that was all about ditching household products that contain harmful chemicals and switching them out for chemical-free options.  There is a great app called Think Dirty that rates household products like deodorant, toothpaste, laundry detergent, etc. It is SHOCKING what some of those brand name commercial products have in them.

For example:

Yikes!!  And the woman leading the class shared a story about laundry detergent and how for years she thought she was using a “safer” product by using a laundry detergent that was scent-free.  Until she found out that the companies actually have to add synthetic fragrance in order to make it scent-free because the chemicals used to make the product have a scent that has to be disguised in order for it to be “odorless”.  Umm….what?!?!?!  This blew my mind.  We think that by buying products that are fragrance free or dye free, we are somehow making a “greener” choice for our families, but that’s not the case.

In the class she provided both a DIY chemical-free option and a pre-made Young Living option, which is great since not everyone is into making their own cleaning products.  And she sent us home with our own samples of the DIY version to try!

Want to make your own?

Powder Laundry Detergent
2 bars of shaved bar soap( Dr. Bronner’s)
2 cups borax
2 cups washing soda
1/2 cup Baking Soda
10-15 drops Thieves Oil

Put the soap bars in the food processor or blender and process. Thoroughly stir all ingredients together. Add 10- 15 drop Thieves Oil. Store in a sealed container.
Use 1 Tbsp. per load (or 2-3 Tbsp. for large or heavily soiled loads) (approximately 64-128 loads depending on how much is used)

Not interested in going the DIY route, but still want to go chemical-free?

Along with switching out my laundry detergent, I also swapped out the liquid fabric softener and dryer sheets for Woolzies dryer balls.  I can put a few drops of my favorite essential oil on them and my dryer not only dries more efficiently with the balls but my laundry smells great – naturally!

I’ll share more about the dishwasher detergent switch in another post, so be sure to check back or subscribe to my newsletter to get notified of new posts.

Gifts for Guys – DIY Shave Set

DIY Aftershave and Pre-Shave Oil

Eric has been using some high-end shaving products that he’s been mostly happy with, but when I stumbled upon recipes for pre-shave oil and aftershave I thought it was worth making up a batch for him to try.

Pre-Shave Oil:

* 1 oz. Olive Oil
* 4 drops Vitamin E
* 8 drops Young Living Lavender Essential Oil
* 4 drops Young Living Orange Essential Oil

Pre-shave oil is used to prepare your skin for shaving so that the razor glides across it without dragging.  Lavender is great for the skin and pairing it with Orange oil makes for a fantastic smell.  The Vitamin E is also great for the skin.

For the After Shave, you want something that is pleasant smelling since it’s the last thing that gets applied.  The original recipe called for Valor Essential Oil, which is a Young Living Blend that includes Rosewood, Blue Tansy, Frankincense, and Spruce Essential Oils. It’s a blend that helps encourage confidence and courage, and I couldn’t argue with that. Witch Hazel is an astringent which tightens pores and is also anti-inflammatory.  The first time I made this for Eric I used Valor, but when he asked for a refill, I switched over to Palo Santo which he has been very happy with.

After Shave recipe:

* 1 oz. Witch Hazel
* 4 drops Vitamin E
* 12 drops Valor Essential Oil (or another oil of your choice – Sandalwood would be awesome!)

*Shake before use

I have to say that after Eric used up the first batch of Aftershave, he went back to his old store bought aftershave to use up what he had left.  He quickly found though that those red bumps and ingrown hairs that he’d fought with previously were now back.  So, that was the end of the store bought aftershave.  Now Eric only uses this DIY version, and since it’s chemical-free, that’s a huge bonus!

Then I was down to what to do for shaving cream/shave soap.  The original post I found the pre-shave and after shave recipes on didn’t have a shaving cream recipe, so I went in search of one.  Eric uses a shaving brush and shaving soap, so I had to find something that would lather up but not gum up the bristles of the brush.  I found this recipe online that looked like it might be good.

Minty Fresh Shaving Cream
* 1/3 cup of Shea Butter
* 1/3 cup of Coconut Oil
* 3 TB raw olive oil (I used Jojoba oil)
* 1 tsp. Castile soap
* 7-8 drops of Peppermint or essential oil of your choice (I used lavender and orange again)

Directions
Put your shea butter and coconut oil in a double burner. Put on low heat and let the fats melt. Take off of heat and pour your oils into a glass bowl. Add your olive oil. Let slightly cool and add your Castile soap and essential oil. Put in refrigerator for about an hour or until the solution starts to solidify. Then remove from fridge and whip your solution with an immersion blender until it forms a whipped cream texture. Scoop into your glass container. Close with lid and store in a dark, cool place.

Unfortunately, my first run at this recipe was 90% of the way there, but needed some tweaking.  I ended up adding a little more of the Castile soap so that it would lather up a bit better and not be quite so “gummy” on the brush.  That worked much better.  I will probably tweak this a little bit more the next time around.

Exfoliating Facial Cleanser and Body Butter

Facial Cleanser and Body Butter

One of the best things about using essential oils is discovering that you can use them to make your own chemical-free beauty products.  I’d been wanting to try my hand at homemade body butter and after seeing a recipe for one on Instagram, I decided to give it a go.

Body Butter:
1 cup raw coconut oil
1/2 cup shea butter
1 Tablespoon vitamin E oil
15 drops of your favorite essential oil

*Mix on high until light and fluffy.

For mine I decided to use lavender and Joy.  Lavender is wonderful for your skin and I thought Joy would give it a nice bonus as a mood booster.  Joy is a blend that contains Bergamot, Ylang Ylang, Geranium, Rose, and several other luxurious oils.

Joy Essential Oil

My batch made a ton, so I put a little bit in a small jar I could keep on my vanity and then put the remainder in a big canning jar that I could re-fill from.

Eric had also asked if I could make him some sort of facial cleanser because he was about to run out of what he had been using.  So, I looked around online and found a super simple recipe to try.

Exfoliating Facial Cleanser:

1/4 cup Castile soap
1 T baking soda
3/4 tsp coconut oil
10 drops lime
10 drops tea tree

*doubled this for 1 jar
*shake before using

I followed the recipe, including using lime and tea tree oil.  Because lime is a citrus oil, you must put it in a glass container as it will break down plastics.  But I thought lime would be a great invigorating scent to use in the shower.  I did get a bit concerned about using a glass container in the shower, especially if your hands get slippery, so next time I make this I’ll use something other than a citrus oil.  But if you’re using this at the sink, glass is just fine.  And the baking soda in this recipe is a very gentle exfoliator.

Tea tree oil (Melaleuca A.) is also excellent for skin along with other healthy properties.

I hope you give these a try – let me know if you do!
